Xavier School of Computer Science & Engineering
Xavier University Bhubaneswar
Dear Editor,
Across India, many companies are struggling to fill Information and Communication Technology (IT/ICT) positions that require coding skills and an understanding of computer hardware. Whether the company is a tech start-up, a thriving financial institution, a public sector arm, or a blue-chip manufacturer, many ICT positions remain open because it is challenging to fill them from the local resource pools. School programs still fail to pique students’ interest in coding and electronic design. Students need effective tools and resources to develop skills to ensure a brighter future for themselves and the nation.
Xavier School of Computer Science organized Coding and Circuit Camp (XCC’19) to spur students’ interest in crucial technologies and careers such as Game Programming, AI, Machine Learning, Blockchain, Internet of Things, and Nano-computing, early on.
Nearly 100 students, mostly seniors from 10+ different nearby high-schools, participated in the day-long camp marked by inspirational speeches, hands-on training in visual coding, game programming, web-design and circuit design. Students and teachers were treated to healthy meals and a campus tour.
Following the welcome and program description by the convenor Prof. Priyadarsan Patra, there were speeches by distinguished speakers from the Industry and Academia including Mr. Chandrasekhar Chitrala, Managing Director of Catalyst IT Solutions and Mr. Sakya Singh Mohapatra, the founder of SakRobotix Lab, took to the podium to share a few words of advice and inspiration to the assembled audience. Dean Dr. Patra gave a tech talk on how computers are built and how to make machines intelligent in the “cognitive era” of the ensuing Industrial Revolution 4.0. There was discussion on how to thrive and survive creatively in this age of great scientific advances and great potential catastrophes.
The camp ended after an exciting quiz competition followed by moving speeches by 9 participant school students and teachers who shared their wonderful experience of the day. Visit https://xcomp.edu.in/xcc for details.
Kudos to all volunteers, faculty and the support staff for a memorable event!
